The 2001 vintage is truly a classic and will benefit from years of aging. This vintage was characterized by an early bloom and long growing season that yielded grapes of exceptional maturity. This wine has the unique ability to be rich and complex while possessing a smooth and silky texture.
Wine Advocate The impeccably made 2001 Dominus boasts a dense plum/purple color in addition to a fragrant, promising perfume of cocoa, cedar, coffee, roasted herbs, and copious quantities of black fruits. There are 7,000 cases of this 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot blend. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with sweet but noticeable tannin, a layered mid-palate, and a long finish with obvious tannin, it will require 3-4 years of cellaring. It should last for two decades. Score: 95. —Robert Parker, December 2003.Dominus is the red wine produced from the historical Napanook vineyard, 124 acres in size, in Yountville, mid-Napa Valley, California. Christian Moueix of St. Emilion and Pomerol (France) began producing Dominus with the 1983 vintage. The wine is essentially made from Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It has now obtained worldwide recognition and although Californian by birth with its opulence, spiciness and rich fruit, it clearly has a French reference with its emphasis on elegance and refinement. A winery - designed by Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron - has been built on the site in 1997, and is closed to the public. A second wine, named Napanook, has been produced since 1996.
